Self Accountability

A question that comes up often in therapy is “How do I keep myself accountable”. Often this question is driven by somebody struggling with staying on top of their tasks, responsibilities or good habits. You might be able to relate to the feeling of knowing that doing something is good for you - and that you will feel better after doing it, yet still struggling to pull it off!

This is where accountability comes in. Have you ever wondered why you likely keep doctors appointments more steadily then you do keep up with other good habits? The answer lies in accountability. When you know there is somebody on the other end who will be impacted or if there is a consequence to lack of action; you are obviously more inclined to take action! Whereas when it is only you and no acute consequence, it is way easier to rationalize being stagnant or procrastinate.

An idea to consider in better navigating the world of accountability and procrastination is recognizing that EVEN when you are held accountable by somebody else or a consequence, YOU and only you are deciding that this other person or consequence is worthy of you taking action. To that end, what is stopping YOU from making that same decision absent of the external accountability factor?

Obviously, this is an simplification and this route of thinking is way easier said then done, however the main point to extract from this sentiment is that self-empowerment through reminding ourselves that accountability ALWAYS comes from within; even when it seems driven by an external force can go a long way and can be the first step to making positive changes.

If you struggle with procrastination or keeping yourself accountable; therapy can help!
