Let’s talk about it!

The Benefit of Positive Self Talk

When it comes to cliche therapy techniques, the first you think you might think of is a person standing in the mirror saying positive affirmations to themselves.

The reason this has become the trope is because it works! We are either consciously or unconsciously talking to ourselves regularly throughout our day. You may not even be aware of what the voice inside of your head is saying about you but it might not be the nicest.

Make sure your internal narrative is that of positive self-talk.

Consider the empty chair technique as an exercise to utilize. You consider how you would treat a friend in a similar situation. Take 5 minutes to picture anybody that you care about and creatively imagine they were saying to themselves what you are saying to you. How would you respond to them?

Something to consider is that your response would not just be more understanding and compassionate because you are being nice but rather because that is your more objective perspective.

Even if this all makes sense - it is very important to practice. Our thoughts are all conditioned and in part a habit like any other. You want to make sure you are steadfast and consistent in challenging the automatic narrative and slowly shift the habit to a healthier one.

Another way to look at this is looking at our thoughts as fuel . It is what propels us every day. To that end, you want to make sure that you are ingesting high quality fuel.

If positive self talk is something that you struggle with, therapy can help!
